The university of the future is coming soon to Perth

This transformational story began with the confirmation in September 2020, that ECU City would be the centrepiece of the Perth City Deal, a collaboration between the Australian Government, the Western Australian Government, and City of Perth.

In August 2021, the ECU City Development Application was lodged and subsequently approved in December 2021. Further design development and documentation took place as that year progressed, and into 2022.

In March 2022, ECU City’s funding partners - the Commonwealth and State Governments, and ECU - announced a boost to their existing commitment. ECU also appointed Multiplex as Head Contractor, paving the way for a move to the construction phase of the project - with main construction works now well underway.

ECU City is due for completion in late 2025, with first students expected to arrive in semester one, 2026.

ECU City is set to energise Perth’s CBD, attracting around 10,000 students and staff when it opens.

By 2030, it will grow to over 11,500 students and staff, bringing boundless opportunities for students, the university, and the city itself.

This will be amplified by more than 300 live WAAPA performances each year, a reimagined public square at the city’s most important transport hub, and a program of industry engagement that will support a highly skilled, digitally driven and innovative workforce for the future.

“I think this is going to change the way the university delivers education. It will be far more integrated than a traditional campus, and more connected into the lifeblood of the city. It is a university that is on show; an ambassador for how learning is seen and understood in the community.”

Neil Appleton – Director, Lyons
